Internet speed for IPTV in Canada should be stable, not simply fast on paper. This guide explains practical speeds for HD and 4K, how to calculate household bandwidth and how to test the connection used by your television.
Quick answer: how many Mbps does IPTV need?
As a practical target, allow 5 Mbps for one SD stream, 10 Mbps for HD, 15 Mbps for Full HD and 25 to 35 Mbps for 4K. These targets include useful headroom because real home networks are shared and Wi-Fi speed can change from one room to another.
These are planning targets rather than universal technical minimums. As a reference, Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K. YouTube lists about 20 Mbps as its recommended sustained speed for 4K UHD playback. Actual IPTV requirements vary with compression, frame rate and the source.

Speed should be available at the streaming device while other people are using the network. A result measured beside the router may be much higher than the speed available behind the television.
Calculate the bandwidth your household needs
Count the streams that may run at the same time. Then add downloads, gaming, video calls and cloud backups. Finally, keep extra capacity so a short change in Wi-Fi performance does not immediately interrupt playback.
Streaming bandwidth = total of simultaneous streams + 20% to 30% headroom
Example: two Full HD streams at 15 Mbps each require about 30 Mbps. After adding 25% headroom, target at least 38 Mbps available to the home.
- One Full HD screen: aim for at least 15 to 25 Mbps available.
- Two Full HD screens: aim for at least 40 to 50 Mbps available.
- One 4K screen plus normal browsing: aim for at least 50 Mbps.
- Several 4K screens or a busy household: 100 Mbps or more.
The CRTC's current broadband objective says Canadian homes and businesses should have access to at least 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. That is a national connectivity target, not a guarantee that every device will receive 50 Mbps over Wi-Fi.
Why connection quality matters beyond Mbps
A large download number does not describe the full connection. Interruptions can still happen when latency changes sharply or packets are lost. Therefore, check these three measurements as well.
The delay between your device and the test server. Lower and consistent results are preferable.
The variation in latency. Large changes can make a connection feel unstable.
Data that fails to arrive. Even a fast connection can stutter when packet loss is present.

How to test your IPTV connection correctly
Use the same home network
Connect the test device to the same Wi-Fi band or Ethernet connection used by your television or streaming box.
Test near the television
Run the test where the streaming device is located. Testing beside the router can hide weak coverage in the viewing room.
Turn off the VPN during diagnosis

Repeat at different times
Test during the evening and at quieter times. Save the results so you can identify a recurring peak-hour problem.
Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet

- Connect the main television by Ethernet when practical.
